Hi
We are still traveling in New Zealand so there was no new live show this week. This 'encore' episode is about navigating with Google Maps. We have been doing a lot of that! One basic requirement of Google Maps is an Internet connection. Cellular internet works much of the time over here, but not everywhere - just like in the US. When you know you'll be traveling in a region with spotty
connectivity, you should download that region to be available offline:
- In the Google Maps app, tap the 3-line menu in upper left, then Offline Maps
- Android: "Select your own map"
Apple: "Custom Map"
- highlight
- Download
- Tap the pencil at top right to edit the name of this map.
Episode 74 of What Does This Button Do? covers all the basics of navigating using Google Maps: starting navigation with voice or text, managing the orientation of the screen, starting and stopping navigation, adding multiple stops, and my favorite tip - navigating to a photo. Google Maps is changing all the time, so if your screen doesn't look exactly
like what you see in ours, experiment a bit to find the same feature on your screen.
