Hi
What is swipe typing? aka Glide, or Flow, or Gesture.
- One finger typing
- Rub over keyboard to touch each letter of word
- Only lift finger in between words
It takes some practice, but we think you'll like it. Everyone should at least try swipe typing on their phone. Episode 164 of our What Does This Button Do will tell you all about it. For a quick peek though, go ahead and try it on your phone right now.
On an Android phone:
- Try dragging your finger across the keys. Do you see a line tracing the path of your finger? Most Android phones will do this straight out of the box.
- Try typing words: Start with your finger on the first letter and drag to the next until you've touched all the letters in the word, then lift your finger.
On an iPhone:
- Try dragging your finger and see if a line traces your finger's path. Probably not since this is not a built in feature of iPhones.
- You may have an alternate keyboard installed: try longpressing on the globe icon to the left of the spacebar. If you see GBoard, or Swype, or Swiftkey, select it. Then try swiping again. If not, you need to install the free GBoard app. This episode shows you how.
That's the quick tip. Our 45 minute show goes into much more detail on the ways you can use GBoard, like automatic translation, cursor control, and performing Google Search right from the keyboard..
Note: the show starts with a quick tip about reading QR codes later by taking a photo of them and using Google Photos and the Lens button to scan.
