Hi
Are your photos backed up?
If you use Google Photos you've probably turned on a setting called "Backup and Sync" - so your backup is done, right? Maybe yes, and maybe no. If you use Google Photos to view, delete, edit, and share your photos, you need another backup.
I want you to go thru the process right now. Using Google Photos on an Android or iPhone or a computer browser:
- Select a photo, then tap the trashcan to delete it. Notice the message that appears:
"Remove from Google account, Google Drive, synced devices, and places it's shared?"
- Imagine that 60 days have gone by (that's the length of time they stay in the Trash) If you now want to get that photo back, do you have a way to do that? Do you have a backup? Are your photos stored somewhere other than Google Photos?
- If your answer is yes - Good for you. You have a true backup system.
- If your answer is no, don't go crying to Google to get your photo(s) back. They will tell you that YOU DELETED IT - they told you that it was removed from your Google account, Google Drive, synced devices (meaning the phone that took the picture as well as any devices where it had been synced), and places it's shared. YOU CAN'T GET IT BACK.
- Now, since it hasn't actually been 60 days, you can get your deleted photo back from the trash. Using Google Photos, click the 3-line menu and choose Trash. Find the mistakenly deleted photo and select it, then click the restore button - looks like a clock face with a circular arrow.
In Episode 166 of What Does This Button Do we go into more detail and show how we make an extra copy of our photos using Microsoft OneDrive before we ever delete photos or use the Free Up Space command.
