Geeks on Tour

Polynesian Festival in Fort LauderdaleMay was a Fort Lauderdale month. We took advantage of some local events. A Polynesian Festival complete with Hula Dancers. On May 23, we got back on the road, headed for Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Also in May, we presented a 90 minute webinar with the folks from Workamper News. The topic was Staying Connected to the Internet on the Road. We were very happy with how it turned out. If you watch the Webinar, you will get the same information we present at our live seminars at the big RV rallies. A link where you can watch the recorded webinar online will be provided to our Members as soon as it is available.

Upcoming Appearances :
We're on our way to the RV Lifestyle, Education & Safety Conference. We'll be doing our standard seminars on Picasa, Internet, and Blogging; plus two more:

  • Using GPS Systems & Software for Navigation & Fun
  • All about Email on the Road

In This Newsletter

Starting with April's newsletter, we changed the way we present the main articles. To keep the newsletter shorter, you will just see the opening paragraph or so, then, if it interests you, you can click on a link to read the full article. That takes you to our 'Computer Tips for Travelers' blog where you can read the full article *and* leave a comment as well - converting this newsletter into a two-way conversation.

Microsoft Streets and Trips: Navigate Full Screen

We're back on the road and using our Microsoft Streets and Trips software for Trip-Planning and Navigation. Check out all our new Tutorial Videos on Streets and Trips on our website, and we're making more as we go. In this article we're spotlighting one simple but very useful tip that you can use when S&T on your laptop computer is your navigator on the road.

Streets and Trips' screen has lots of parts to it, but, when you're driving, you really only need the map and the next turn info at the bottom. You can easily switch between the two with one touch of the F11 key.

Picasa's new Partner: Picnik Photo Editing Online

Geeks on TourIn the photo at right, I used Picnik to add the large border with rounded corners. It automatically made the reflection at the bottom, and I added the callout, text, and graphics at the top. All in just a few minutes of playing around.

I had never heard of the website Picnik.com until I got the message that Google bought Picnik as part of the Picasa group. Picnik has been around for a while as an online editing tool for photos that you upload from your computer, or that you link to on Picasa Web Albums and many other Photo Sharing Websites like Flickr, Facebook, and Photo Bucket.

Have you been Hacked Lately?

Trojan Horse with Hackers, Hijackers, and SpammersHow did that stuff get on my computer? That is a question I hear all the time when I see an infected computer. The owner typically insists that s/he did nothing to invite malware into the computer.

All of a sudden, there are new icons on the desktop. Your homepage takes you somewhere you don't want to be. Pop-ups are warning of dire problems. The computer seems extra slow. If this has happened to you, you're not alone! Novices and experienced computer professionals alike have stories to tell of computer infections and data hijackings.

Tales of Woe from Peggy and Joe

Joe's computer started sending out emails to everyone on his contact list. Recipients saw an email that came from Joe and looked like a pharmacy store ad full of little blue pills! How embarrassing! And now he's been tagged as a spammer and Google no longer allows him to use Google Ads. When he was alerted to the issue, he ran some additional anti-malware software besides his normal protection and it has been cleaned up, but it will take a while before Google trusts him again. If you suspect an infection on your computer, or even if you don't, we recommend an occasional 'second opinion' scan with something other than your normal anti-virus/anti-spyware software. We recommend a free web-based scan by Vipre *and* MalwareBytes.
